Motorists, farmers, and local residents—many people were closely confronted with the fires on Saturday, July 5th. This was particularly the case in Hérault.
"The more I drive around, the more disgusted I am," laments a local resident whose land was ravaged by flames. His chicken coop and the surrounding area were charred. The 62-year-old still can't believe it. "We've had this land for 30 years, and we've never had a fire," says Claude Ferrando, a resident of Mireval (Hérault).
A9 Motorway Closed
On the afternoon of Saturday, July 5th, a fire broke out in Fabrègues. As residents watched, 400 firefighters battled the flames, aided by Canadair aircraft and Dash drops. The A9 motorway was even closed in both directions for several hours. 400 hectares went up in smoke. The flames stopped less than 200 meters from a resident's home. "We were lucky, the wind picked up, it changed direction, and the firefighters did an extraordinary job," said Laurent Escande, a river resident.
