For the past few weeks, a phenomenon has been taking over social media: Labubu Mania. As the name suggests, this phenomenon concerns Labubu, eccentric little creatures that have become the new darling of influencers and Generation Z. Hung inside luxury bags and dressed by top designers, these figurines are becoming a real obsession.
This Friday, May 23, British fans of Labubu plush toys are sad and disappointed because their favorite figurines have been removed from shelves. This decision was made due to long queues outside stores, which pose security concerns.
As in Great Britain, several European countries have seen a remarkable influx of consumers eager to buy Labubu. Videos showing endless queues outside official stores have circulated online, shocking families who don't understand the craze.
What is Labubu?
Behind this strange name hides a frightening creature. Created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung for the series "The Monsters" and published by Pop Mart, Labubu are small figurines that resemble monsters.
With their flashy colors, large, playful bunny ears, sharp teeth, naive look, and mischievous smile, these figurines quickly became a viral fashion accessory, especially after Lisa, the star of the group Black Pink, sported a €40,000 Labubu on her signature bag.
Besides Lisa, other stars like Rihanna and Dua Lipa have also attached these figurines to their luxury bags.
Foreign, Arab, and Moroccan influencers have also succumbed to the temptation, especially with the "unboxing" phenomenon spreading on TikTok. This phenomenon involves ordering a "blind box" (mystery box) containing a Labubu, then unwrapping it live to discover the figurine's color and accessories. The discovery of a rare edition during this unboxing becomes even more viral!
Despite their high price, which can exceed 100 euros for some models, these figurines are a resounding success: their stocks sell out in a few minutes in official stores.
