A pillar of the Moroccan agricultural economy, the dairy sector employs more than 260,000 producers. It also has an estimated herd of 1.6 million animals and produced 1.96 billion liters of milk in 2023. The organization of this sector and its evolution were highlighted in the Competition Council's opinion on the state of competition in food distribution channels. The dairy sector plays a crucial role in the national economy, providing more than 450,000 permanent jobs and generating a total turnover of over 13.5 billion dirhams, 50% of which directly benefits the rural sector. This figure represents an increase of nearly 3.8% compared to 2022 and 8% compared to 2019.
A vital contribution to food security
This sector also contributes to ensuring the country's food security by supplying the domestic market with a basic product. Domestic milk production covers 96% of national demand, estimated at nearly 74 liters/person/year. This consumption is below international standards (80 liters/person/year recommended by the FAO).
The industrial sector consists of 82 factories or small approved units, of which 20 units alone process more than 95% of production, located in the main upstream geographical production areas. However, the market remains highly concentrated: 12 companies account for 86% of the sector's turnover, and three of them hold nearly 74% of the market share, all products combined.
