In France, the controversy is growing with these spectacular images. Around fifty migrants in the Pas-de-Calais region were on a boat bound for England when police officers pierced the inflatable boat. According to the Nord prefecture, the passengers were facing immediate danger, which explains this intervention, denounced by associations.
South of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on Friday, July 5, a migrant inflatable boat was preparing to sail to England, but police officers intervened by slashing the boat. Panic spread among the thirty or so migrants, all filmed by a British television crew. The Hauts-de-France prefecture justified this action by highlighting security concerns. Indeed, it said the police officers acted with discernment to prevent those in the back from facing immediate danger.
Under international law, it is forbidden to touch a boat while it is in the water. This intervention has been singled out by migrant associations, which denounce police violence. Bénédicte Gaillard, a volunteer with the Osmase62 association, explains: "They slash boats on the beaches, but now they're slashing boats in the water to prevent them from leaving for England. The law is not being respected, and these people are being put in danger."
